I HOPE YOU’VE GOT SOME CANDLES AND A SPOTIFY ACCOUNT BECAUSE THESE AREN’T YOUR TYPICAL ACTS OF SELF CARE…
Many weeks ago, I wrote about having a happiness routine that nurtures high vibes and I wanted to further explore that by telling you about some of the ways I care for my own happiness.
I don’t believe these things alone will increase your happiness, but I like to think these routines will nurture your happiness. I’ll be one of the first to admit that more often than not, you just need to feel what you feel, but what you want to avoid is making it worse. You don’t want to indulge and end up feeling guilty, and you don’t want to sink in self pity. This is where happiness self care comes into play (as well as self-compassion – click here for my post about self compassion).
This isn’t a list of all the things you can do to make yourself look better with manicures, face masks and make-up in order to make you feel good. This is a list of different ways I’ve tried to feed my soul when I need some TLC. I wholeheartedly believe that when you’re feeling off, creating high energy is incredibly difficult, so when I’m having an off day, I turn to things that will soothe me, relax me, unwind me, de-stress me. It’s all about low energy self care. Like a lot of what I talk about, it takes much self awareness to recognise how you’re feeling and what you need to do to feel the high vibes again.
So keep reading for my list of low energy happiness self care routines…
AFFIRMATION MEDITATION TO THE SCENT OF A CANDLE AND THE SOUND OF NATURE
I’ve really dived deep into the art of meditation this year but I’ve only recently dabbled in affirmation meditation and I quite enjoy it. Couple that with the scent of a candle (because how could I not mention candles AGAIN!?!) and the sound of nature and you have yourself one of the most zen (yet empowering) experiences.
If you’re after a playlist idea, try this one below…
TAKE A MINDFUL SHOWER WHILE LISTENING TO CALMING MUSIC
As someone who’s still working from home, my immediate “home from work” routine is taking a shower, and I’ve really enjoyed chucking on some peaceful music while I imagine the day being washed from my soul under the water.
READ A BOOK TO THE SOUND OF CALMING MUSIC AND WITH THE SCENT OF A CANDLE
Even better if the book is the work of fiction and you can escape reality in the most peaceful setting, I’d recommend playing music without lyrics so you’re not distracted as you read.
CREATE A VISION BOARD OF YOUR DREAM LIFE WHILE LISTENING TO YOUR FAVOURITE HIGH VIBE MUSIC
I think getting on Pinterest and being inspired by bedroom decor, fashion, recipes, art and travel pictures feels so nice. Put on some high vibe music and use the images you find for a personal mood board or vision board.
DANCE TO YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC WHILE BAKING DELICIOUS TREATS
I find myself becoming SO happy when I put on some fun music and dance in the kitchen as I make dinner or snacks. I don’t know what it is but I think of the possibilities of the future, I think about how great it feels to just be alive, I imagine the song being my story and feel the emotions of the song.
WATCH THE SUNRISE OR SUNSET AS YOU SIP A WARM DRINK AND LISTEN TO CALMING MUSIC
I’m a sucker for picturesque scenery and beautiful music that just makes you feel all the feels. This is why I’m desperate to move somewhere remote where I have a view of a forest or mountains and I get to sit on my balcony everyday listening to zen music, taking in the view and chugging hot chocolates.
One of my favourite playlists for calming music is…
TAKE A WALK IN THE SUNSHINE AND NATURE TO A PODCAST EPISODE
I will often listen to a podcast while I walk because it’s the perfect time with zero distractions. My favourite podcasts at the moment are ‘The Rise & Conquer Podcast’ with Georgie Stevenson, ‘Mental Makeover’ with Lauren Curtis, ‘Schnitt Talk’ by Barstool Sports, ‘Kalyn’s Coffee Talk’ with Kalyn Nicholson, and ‘The Health Code’ with Kurt and Sarah.
TAKE A DIGITAL DETOX DAY, WEEKEND OR WEEK, TO DO ANY, SOME OR ALL THE IDEAS ON THIS LIST!
I haven’t done this in so long but I think I need to prioritise it and schedule it in once a month. It’s so refreshing to take a step back from social media and not get caught up in comparisons and FOMO which just encourage you to mentally spiral.
JOURNAL HOW YOU’RE FEELING AND WHY – JUST GET IT ALL OUT AND ONTO PAPER
I’ve never really been a journaling gal and I’m still not too sure if I’m doing it right (though I haven’t exactly been doing it for long), but I recently went through some family drama and tried to make sense of everything by putting my feelings down in my journal. Everything just poured out of me and to be honest it was everything I wanted to say out loud to certain family members, but couldn’t. I had to get it out of my head and writing it out ended the cycle of “conversations” in my head. The process allowed me to move on from the event and put my thoughts and energy into something more important.
I hope these routines gave you some ideas of what you can do next time you’re mentally and emotionally under the weather and if you have any tips or tricks of your own, please do let me (and others) know by commenting!
